The X post from @Top_Disaster accurately summarizes five notable earthquakes reported by the USGS on December 27, 2025:


- **6.6 magnitude**: 31 km ESE of Yilan, Taiwan (felt strongly in Taipei and surrounding areas; no immediate reports of major damage or tsunami warning).

- **5.6 magnitude**: South of Bengkulu, Indonesia (deep event, part of a cluster in the region).

- **5.6 magnitude**: Northwest of Añatuya, Argentina.

- **5.1 magnitude**: ESE of Kokopo, Papua New Guinea.

- **5.1 magnitude**: ESE of Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia.


These events occurred in tectonically active zones, primarily along the **Pacific Ring of Fire** (Taiwan, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Russia) and the Andean subduction zone (Argentina). Depths varied, reducing tsunami risk in most cases. This aligns with typical daily global seismicity—over 20 earthquakes of M2.5+ often occur worldwide, with several reaching M5+.

What is Intensity and the Mercalli Intensity Scale?

The amount of shaking that occurs on the surface due to an earthquake is called the intensity. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.
Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.

No widespread casualties or major destruction reported as of now, though monitoring continues for aftershocks, especially in Taiwan.
