Day three of the Cannes Film Festival was incredibly underwhelming—probably the most lacklustre since I started covering it back in 2009. I went into the evening hopeful that the Dossier 137 premiere would serve a few memorable red carpet moments, but it was mostly a flat affair—bar a couple of exceptions.
Rebecca Patricia Armstrong is such a beautiful young actress, so I was rooting for a big fashion moment. Instead, we got this Nicolas Jebran gown that left me scratching my head. In some angles, that exaggerated shoulder detail looked like an arm sling. Add in the single glove—which felt more dated than directional—and the overall effect missed the mark. She deserved a look that celebrated her youthful elegance, not one that aged her.
Andie MacDowell wore a silver satin Alberta Ferretti gown with a plunging black lace-trimmed neckline. It was fine, but not enough for Cannes. Remember the glory days when Alberta Ferretti ruled this red carpet with one ethereal moment after another? I do, and I miss them.
Ariana Greenblatt went the minimalist route in cream Cong Tri halter gown styled with Chopard jewels.
Joséphine Japy did the same in a black Prada column. Neither look was offensive, but neither are memorable.
Veena Praveenar Singh, however, did bring the drama. Her black liquid gazar Michael Cinco Couture gown gave the premiere that couture wow moment the evening sorely needed. Sleek, sculptural, and powerful—the look hit every note. The Aariya diamonds were the cherry on top. This is how you do Cannes.
Araya Hargate rounded out the evening in vintage Jean Paul Gaultier Fall 2000 Haute Couture gown. I love that she’s always willing to go archive-diving.
Elaine Zhong Chuxi single-handedly saved this red carpet wearing a breath-taking Elie Saab Spring 2023 Haute Couture gown.
