In the video shared by Nick Sortor on X, a major police and National Guard response is visible on I-695 in Washington, D.C., approximately half a mile from the U.S. Capitol, following reports of an officer down.
The incident occurred around 10:10 PM on December 23, 2025, in the eastbound lanes just after the 3rd Street Tunnel. A Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officer was struck by a vehicle while assisting a disabled motorist on the side of the highway. The officer appeared unresponsive and was quickly carried by fellow officers into a police cruiser (bypassing waiting for an ambulance) and rushed to a trauma center under heavy escort. Witnesses, including Sortor, reported not seeing the officer move after the impact.According to MPD updates:
- The driver of the striking vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
- No charges have been mentioned yet, and there's no indication of intentional foul play—this appears to be a serious traffic accident.
- The officer was transported to a hospital and is receiving treatment; he was described as "in and out of consciousness" in early reports, but no further condition updates have been released as of December 24.
- All eastbound lanes of I-695 were closed for several hours for the Major Crash Unit investigation.
