Summary of the post (in English):A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck off the coast of Aomori Prefecture, Japan earlier today. 

Following the quake, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued an extraordinary advisory warning of the possibility of a mega-thrust earthquake up to M9.0 in the Hokkaido–Sanriku offshore region within the next week. 

Tsunami warnings/advisories remain in effect along wide areas of the Pacific coast. 

118 municipalities have been instructed to prepare for emergencies. 

Residents are strongly urged to secure at least one week’s worth of food, water, and daily necessities, review evacuation routes, and prepare for possible major aftershocks or a larger quake. 

So far, tsunami waves of around 0.5 meters have been observed, and no fatalities have been reported.


The warning is linked to increased seismic activity along the Japan Trench, the same plate boundary that produced the devastating M9.0–9.1 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in 2011. Authorities are treating this as a serious elevated-risk period.
