California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a law requiring social media platforms to erase users’ data when accounts are deleted.

California's AB 656, signed by Gov. Newsom on October 8, 2025, mandates social media platforms to enable simple account deletion with full erasure of user data, preventing lingering personal information after cancellation.

This law extends California's robust privacy framework, including the CCPA and 2023 DELETE Act, by streamlining opt-outs and boosting transparency on data broker access to user information.

On X, the post garnered over 3.5 million views with mixed reactions, including conservative praise as a "rare W" for Newsom alongside skeptical comments about enabling anonymous threats or data evasion.
