The post Bodies of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa Remain Unclaimed Over a Month After Their Deaths appeared first on Consequence.

Gene Hackman’s and his wife Betsy Arakawa’s bodies were discovered over a month ago in their New Mexico home; and yet, according to TMZ, their remains have yet to be claimed as of March 27th.

The 95-year-old Academy Award-winning actor and his 65-year-old wife were both found dead on February 26th. A medical examiner later determined that Hackman died from “hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer’s disease as a significant contributory factor, while Arakawa passed from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare disease carried by rodents. It’s estimated that the couple died around one week apart, with Hackman passing around February 18th following his wife’s death on February 11th. Both bodies were severely decomposed when they were discovered by maintenance workers.

TMZ adds that it’s unclear why the bodies remain unclaimed, though it’s possible the family is still making funeral arrangements or finalizing plans.

Hackman’s three adult children were not named in his will, as he listed Arakawa as his sole beneficiary. The actor previously described his relationship with his children as being “tough.” He told the New York Times in 1989, “You become very selfish as an actor. Even though I had a family, I took jobs that would separate us for three or four months at a time. The temptations in that, the money and recognition, it was too much for the poor boy in me.”

Expanding on his relationship with them in a 2000 interview with The Irish Independent, Hackman said, “It’s tough being the son or daughter of a celebrity. I couldn’t always be home with them when they were growing up, and then, living in California, they’ve had my success always hanging over their heads.”

Following news of his passing, Hackman’s children and granddaughter released a joint statement, saying: “He was loved and admired by millions around the world for his brilliant acting career, but to us, he was always just Dad and Grandpa. We will miss him sorely, and are devastated by the loss.”
